Rideouts with Harrogate Advanced Bikes...
We have regular rideouts on the 3rd Sunday of each month from March to October (see Diary for details), meeting 9:15am at the Sun Inn car park, Norwood nr Harrogate - B6451 Otley to Pateley Bridge road. These are NOT training rides, but are an opportunity to meet and ride with us, and if you are in training, an opportunity to consolidate the skills you are learning.
There are a variety of types of rideouts organised, some using the "Marshalling System" (see below) and some not. The latter rideouts are more about all meeting up at a specified place and each person taking their own time and route as they see fit. Each type of rideout can suit different riders and preferences so there is no pressure to go faster or slower than you're completely comfortable with.
Marshalling System At the head of the ride out-group is the ride leader. The ride leader knows the way and sets off at a relaxed pace (generally about 5-10mph below the speed limit). Unless agreed beforehand, no one will overtake the ride leader.
At the back of the group is the tail end Charlie. The tail end also knows the way and follows at the same pace as the riders at the back of the group. Unless agreed beforehand, the tail end will not pass anyone in the group.
When the group gets to a junction the person immediately behind the ride leader will be tasked with acting as a “markers”. The marker waits at the junction, counting the riders that pass, and remains there until the tail end Charlie arrives. The marker then sets off. At the next junction the process is repeated with the next person behind the ride leader.
If you do not want to act as a marker just make sure you are not just behind the ride leader at a junction – if you enjoy being a marker then just unobtrusively make your way back to the head of the group and mark again.
