On Monday 17th July 2017, members of Harrogate Advanced Bikes were delighted to welcome IAM Chief Executive Sarah Sillars to the club monthly meeting held at Bilton Cricket Club. There was a very good turn-out of club members and it was also pleasing to see some old familar faces renewing their contact with our club.
Sarah was able to address some interesting and important themes including: –
- Growing the popularity of commuting by motorcycle and scooter as a response to intolerable urban congestion and the interesting Dutch research illustrating the dramatic difference to rush hour congestion caused by even a small percentage switch of road users to two wheels.
- Lobbying to address motorcyling more directly within government policy including Awareness, Education, Practical measures, Greater financial incentive, Engagement with Society and through joining forces with other groups with a similar agenda, particularly cyclists.
- Identifying the groups in society likely to consider taking up motorcycling in future and studying why many bikers ‘lapse’.
- How to build confidence among potential bikers and strategies to communicate with them.
At the end of her presentation Sarah challenged members to go out and spread the message of the value of further training among all sections of the motor cycling and scooter community.
After her talk and responding to members questions, Sarah was delighted to present a specially framed Skills for Life Certificate to HAB Associate Gary Wilson who has the distinction of having gained Grade 1 in very single observed category of competency, truly a First Class achievement.
Sarah was thanked for coming to Leeds by John Blanchfield, HAB Vice chair, and presented with a bouquet of flowers together with one of our club’s greatly prized souvenir mugs.
