Dear Members,

I hope that you all had a pleasant Christmas and look forward to seeing you in 2024. It is now time for all Members and Associates to pay the annual subscription, which remains at £15. Please pay this by BACS if you have the facilities, at Lloyd’s Bank, Harrogate, sort  code 30-93-91 and account number 01807888, in the name Harrogate Advanced Bikes.

If you are unable to pay by BACS, you can do it in person at the bank or by giving me cash or a cheque at the next meeting.

It is also necessary for me to remind you that you must also pay your IAM subscriptions in order to participate in club activities, including ride-outs.

I wish you all safe and happy riding over the next year.

Best wishes,

HAB Sunday 17th Ride-Out Seaways Cafe

Hi Folks, just in case you were wondering, there is a Ride-Out this weekend. I’ve been waiting and watching the weather forecast and it looks like its going to be relatively sunny and warm on Sunday. Nevertheless, a shortish ride of approximately 119 miles, not too far away from home.

Meeting at Dragon Road lorry park, Harrogate, next door to Asda (fuel available), from 9.00am with a prompt start at 9.30am. We are heading to Squires Cafe at Newthorpe LS25 5LX, for a coffee stop, and then cross country to another motorcyclists favourite, Seaways Cafe at Fridaythorpe, YO25 9RX. No tables to book, so we can just turn up when we like.

Back home after lunch and cross country again on different roads, finishing the ride at Morrisons in Wetherby where you can refill your tank without breaking the bank.

I know it’s a busy time for families, but take a break from Christmas shopping and join the last official HAB Ride of the Year.

Ride leader- Barry Ring- 119 miles.

IAM Petition for scrapping VAT on Air Vests

Make a change by signing the petition to scrap VAT on life-saving air vests

Please see communications below from the IAM

Dear member, Since our last email, we’ve been busy spreading the word about our campaign to scrap VAT on life-saving air vests. As part of our campaign to protect motorcyclists and reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads, we’ve been speaking with cross-party MP’s and our partners to raise awareness of the importance of recognising motorcyclists as vulnerable road users. Did you know 1 in 5 road deaths on UK roads is a motorcyclist, and nearly two thirds of motorcyclists said the cost of safety wear has put them off buying it? We know more needs to be done to protect all road users, so by removing VAT on air vests will allow more people to access this life-saving PPE. Our petition now has over 4,000 signatures, getting us closer to achieving our target of 10,000. Thank you again for all your support. If you haven’t already done so, please consider sharing our petition with friends and family, and let’s make the roads a safe place for everyone.

Best wishes,
Nicholas Lyes

HAB Sunday 19th November Ride-Out

We are running out of month’s in 2023 to indulge our riding passion. Here comes Trevor Cooper with another opportunity this coming Sunday.

Setting off again through the East Riding of Yorkshire and northwards into The Wolds. Through Wetwang and Sledmere back into North Yorkshire, crossing the A64 and westwards, finding the A169 northwards to the NY500 Malton Road, Pickering YO18 8EA for lunch.

After lunch retracing our route south on the A169, across country, past Flamingoland, Butterwick to Hovingham and through the Howardian Hills back to Boroughbridge where the ride will end.

HAB Monday 13th November Meeting

Our November Harrogate Advanced Bikes meeting is at Bilton Cricket Club. Get there for a natter and a catch-up 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.

The clocks changed last week, the kids have gone back to school and there also seemed to be a marked increase in road traffic. A welcome coincidence then that Chris Hood, former police motorcyclist, East Yorkshire IAM and RoSPA Examiner for both cars and bikes, has agreed to give us a presentation about “Information and Hazards”. Some members will have met Chris before at IAM meetings and as he is a high mileage rider, marshalling cycle races and touring Europe, you may also have spotted his selfies in Motorcycle News’s MCN5000 stopping for a well earned break.

Bilton Cricket Club’s buffet will be served as usual after the presentation.

Look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Weds December 6th Ride-Out & Christmas Lunch

Our Christmas Lunch this year will again be at the Bay Horse in Great Broughton near Stokesley.

Last year was the first time we had to abandon the official ride-in owing to wintry weather. I’m hopeful this year we can ‘do it properly ’ and once again arrive at the Bay Horse in style! If you decide to arrival on four wheels anyway of course it won’t be held against you, much.

A table has been booked for 12 noon Wednesday 6th December – earlier than other years so as to leave time to get home in reasonable light.

The pub requires meals to be pre-ordered with a deposit of £10 per person. As I’ve made the reservation, can you choose from the menu below and let me have your requirements as soon as possible, along with your deposit, so I can place the final order. Thanks!

Hope you are able to join us.

Not the Christmas Dinner (NTCD) 2024

Ladies and Gentlemen.

Last year, 22 of our number enjoyed a rather pleasant “NTCD” at Papa’s Mediterranean Restaurant in Harrogate.

The format was simple – we asked chef Ronnie to bring us a selection of the house favourites – and not allow us to go hungry!

I think he hit the target on both counts and I believe that everyone attending thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

For that reason, we’ve elected to repeat this for 2024 and have booked the same venue, for 25 people, on the evening of Saturday February 17, 2024. Cost will be £30 per head, including gratuity.

The table is booked for 7:30 pm and I’d suggest meeting in the bar area from 7:00.

Karen & I will be away for much of January and early February so I’d like to get as much as possible arranged before we leave.

Could I therefore ask members to let me know initially:

  1. If you would be interested in attending as described (Yes/No).
  2. How many places would you like?
  3. If you have any food allergies that I should be aware of?

Your early indication by email to peter@plus-point.co.uk  with a subject of: NTCD would be very much appreciated and enable us to get the details broadly settled before the end of November.

Many thanks, Peter & Karen Smith
